October public night (through October 20)
Leander McCormick Observatory

This fall, Leander McCormick Observatory in Charlottesville is open to the public on the FIRST and THIRD Friday night of each month, except for holidays. Weather permitting, these nights include observing with all of the telescopes, audio-visual presentations, and tours of the observatory. Cajun and Appalachian Masters Unite (through October 20)

Free women's health screenings (through October 21)

Twilight Tours through Scottsville History (through October 21)

Scottsville Museum announces the fifth annual "Twilight Tours through Scottsville History," on Saturday and Sunday, October 21st and 22nd. Take a lamplight stroll through historic Scottsville with your tour guide and encounter town residents from bygone eras. The hour-long outdoor, walking tours depart every 20 minutes from the Museum. Bill Harris performs Cole Porter (through October 21)

Concert by Fire women's ensemble (through October 22)
Fire, women's a capella chamber ensemble

Fire, a women’s a cappella chamber ensemble, will offer a program of music by Mozart, Kodaly, and Sato, and featuring the premiere of “Beloved, God’s Chosen” by Alice Parker. The concert will be at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, October 22nd, at First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville. The concert is free, open to the public, and benefits PACEM, the organization that provides shelter and support services to our homeless neighbors during the colder months of the year. Lulu Miller and Wes Swing: Making Sense of the World (through October 22)
Virginia Foundation for the Humanities

Lulu Miller, Virginia Foundation for the Humanities fellow and creator of NPR's hit podcast Invisibilia, joins Charlottesville's cello sweetheart Wes Swing at 6 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 22 at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative in Charlottesville, for an evening of existential, electro-acoustic adventure. Miller will read an excerpt from her forthcoming book, Why Fish Don't Exist and refreshments will be available for purchase. Tuesday Evening Concert Series features Kutik and Myer (through October 24)

Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik and pianist Spencer Myer will join forces to perform works by Mendelssohn, Bloch, Debussy, Franck, and Ravel on Tuesday, October 24th, at 7:30 p.m. As part of the Tuesday Evening Concert Series, the concert will be in the University of Virginia’s Cabell Hall Auditorium. Class on how to safely prepare and serve food. (through October 25)

In an effort to help community members learn how to safely prepare and serve food, the Thomas Jefferson Health District’s Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department will host a free Safe Food Handling Class on Wednesday, October 25th, from 5:30  to 8:00 p.m. The class is for anyone who shops, prepares, or serves food to the public, including food-service industry workers and anyone who cooks and serves food at festivals, fairs, farmers markets, schools, faith-based organizations, and civic groups.  Participants should reserve their space in advance by contacting Archer Campbell at 434-972-6219.

Forum on the pros and cons of fracking (through October 27)

The Garden Club of Virginia presents the 59th Conservation Forum "Fracking in Virginia: From All Perspectives" on Friday, October 27th from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. Speakers will address the current status of hydraulic fracking in our state, followed by a balanced discussion on impacts to our economy, water, and health. Annual Spirit Walks benefit historical society (through October 27)

The annual Spirit Walk benefiting Charlottesville's Historical Society is in two parts: On Friday, October 27th, tour histoic Maplewood Cemetery and meet former residents who now rest there. And on Saturday, the 28th, step back in time as you are guided through Charlottesville's historic Court Square. Included in this tour is a trial held inside the Albemarle County Court House, well-known to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Tours depart every 15 minutes both days starting at 6 p.m. and last approximately 75 minutes. Tickets are now on sale. For more information, go online to AlbemarleHistory.org.

McGuffey Art Center

The McGuffey Art Center is hosting three exhibitions in October: Les Demoiselles (Lay DEH mwah zehl), works by Bob Anderson inspired by Picasso’s first Cubist painting; The Artist's Voice in Contemporary Activism, an All Rise group show exploring the role of the artist in intersectional activism; and Innisfree Village, works by a residential community of adults with disabilities. Free singling lessons with Harrisonburg Harmonizers (through October 30)

If you sing in the shower or along with the radio, Harrisonburg Harmonizers have a deal for YOU: free singing lessons. Participants do not have to read music to enjoy this course. The singing lessons are free and will be presented in a warm friendly atmosphere appropriate both to beginners and to experienced singers. The lessons are on six consecutive Monday nights from October 30th to December 10th at Providence Baptist Church in Harrisonburg. Participants will be invited to sing with the Harrisonburg Harmonizers in a Holiday show presented at Bridgewater College. Registration is limited and is offered on a first come, first served basis. Halloween organ special (through October 31)

On October 31st at 3:30 pm, The Westminster Organ Concert Series presents its 9th annual Children's Halloween Concert. Area Drinking Water Reservoir Levels Declining (through October 31)
Albemarle County

The City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County Service Authority and Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority have declared a drought watch stage. Weeks of dry weather have resulted in lower than normal river and reservoir levels and request area residents to restrict outdoor water usage. To sustain acceptable levels in the water supply, the request is for residents to limit outdoor watering between 9:00pm and 10:00am. For more information, visit serviceauthority.org.

Monticello Bird Club's annual bird seed sale (through November 01)

Come to the First Fridays reception for the November exhibits at McGuffey Art Center - November 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Two principals of Three Notch'd Road, Charlottesville's Baroque Ensemble, will deliver a public lecture Claudio Monteverdi: The Man and His Music on Friday, November 3rd, at the University of Virginia. Baroque opera by Rameau (through November 03)

The Perfect Couple – what’s their secret?  The Victory Hall Opera will answer that question when it brings Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Sympathy to life with hip hop choreography and a dream-team cast of opera’s comedic superstars. BridgeLine Blues Charity Event (through November 04)

The nonprofit organization BridgeLine will host the BridgeLine Blues at the Carver Rec Center in Charlottesville on Saturday, November 4th, starting at 6:00pm. Music will be provided by bands of the Central Virginia Blues Society. There will be appetizers and a silent auction, and all proceeds will go directly to residential and day program services for adults with brain injuries. Three Notch'd Road's 7th season opener (through November 04)

Three Notch’d Road, the Charlottesville Baroque Ensemble, opens its seventh season with a celebration of Claudio Monteverdi's 450th year. With a mixed consort of strings, historic trombones, organ, and vocalists, the ensemble explores the breadth of the late Renaissance and early Baroque imagination, from sacred choral works to the toe-tapping Ciaconna. Telling True Stories, a 6-session course for story-telling (through November 05)

 Everyone has a story to tell.  "Telling True Stories" is a six-session course designed to give students the tools they need to find and tell their stories.  Taught by Big Blue Door's co-director Joel Jones, early sessions focus on talking in front of others, finding one's voice, and building great material.  Sessions are on Sundays 1:15-3:45 beginning November 5th at the McGuffey Arts Center.  Information and online registration can be found at bigbluedoor.org

Grant for sister cities projects (through November 14)

The Charlottesville Sister Cities Commission is now accepting grant applications for projects. The Commission invites Charlottesville nonprofits, arts organizations, schools, businesses and individuals to apply for project funding up to $3,000. Grants are available that benefit the Charlottesville community as well as our Sister City communities in Besancon, France; Pleven, Bulgaria;  Winneba, Ghana; or Poggio a Caiano, Italy. The mission of the Commission is to promote understanding and foster relationships between citizens and organizations in these places. The grant application deadline is November 15th. Applications may be submitted by individuals or groups. Completed applications should be sent to cvillesistercities@gmail.com. Holiday band concert (through December 03)

Start a new December tradition by celebrating the holiday season with the 320-member Cavalier Marching Band at the John Paul Jones Arena on December 3rd at 3:00 pm.
