Third concert of the "Bach's Lunch Concert Series" (through May 24)

The third concert of the 30th annual "Bach's Lunch Concert Series" at Christ Episcopal Church will be held on Thursday, May 24th, at 12 noon. John Bullard will perform on classical banjo. Admission is free and lunches will be available for purchase. Donations are gratefully accepted. Christ Episcopal Church is located at 2nd and High Streets, NW, in Charlottesville. Outside Screening of Art 21 Episode: Investigation (through May 24)
McGuffey Art Center

The McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville will host an outdoor screening of the Art 21 episode Investigation on Thursday, May 24th, from 8 to 9 pm. The film features the works of Thomas Hirshorn, Graciela Iturbide, and Leonardo Drew. The event is free, open to the public, and there will be desserts. The Oratorio Society of Virginia will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special gala concert at Old Cabell Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia at 7 p.m., Friday, May 25th. A highlight of the evening's program is the world premiere of The World Called, composed by Virginia's own Adolphus Hailstork as a setting of the poem “Testimonial” by former U.S. Poet Laureate and UVA Commonwealth Professor of English, Rita Dove. Also, Mozart’s Mass in C minor and an excerpt from Handel’s Messiah with full orchestra and the Oratorio Encore Society. Tickets are available at ORATORIOSOCIETY.ORG or from the UVA Arts Box Office.

Help for narcotics addiction (through May 26)

With the opioid crisis and other narcotic addictions causing such harm in so many lives, Narcotics Anonymous is there to help. This community-based fellowship has been changing lives since 1953. Participants needed for UVA blood pressure study (through May 26)
UVA Dept. of Endocrinology

The University of Virginia Department of Endocrinology is conducting a genetic study that examines the role of two gene variants in the development of hypertension -- high blood pressure. Once qualified, participants will be placed on a two-week diet -- one week with high salt and one week with low salt. Their blood pressure is monitored during this time. Fifth Annual Celebrate Rockfish! (through May 26)

The Fifth Annual Celebrate Rockfish fest will kick off at 5pm on Saturday, May 26th, at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton. Horse show competitions to benefit student programs (through May 27)
Montanova Stables Foundation

The Montanova Stables Foundation in Keswick is hosting two horse show competitions to benefit its after-school and summer camp horseback riding and horsemanship program for Albemarle elementary school students. The events are set for Sunday, May 27th, and again on Sunday, August 19th, starting at 8:30 a.m. with events running all day, open to the public with vendors and concessions available. May's shows at McGuffey (through May 27)

The McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville is featuring four shows in the month of May. Megan Elizabeth Read is showing Recent Works in Oil, Lotta Helleberg & Erica Lohan collaborate in a show entitled Traces from Nature, and Kerney Rhoden is showing Faces and Figures: Life Studies in the Studio. Pops at the Paramount: The Best of John Williams (through June 02)

The Charlottesville Symphony returns to The Paramount Theater's stage on Saturday, June 2, at 7:30PM for Pops at The Paramount - The Best of John Williams. The Charlottesville Symphony presents Pops at the Paramount (through June 02)

The Charlottesville Symphony returns to The Paramount Theater on Saturday, June 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. for Pops at The Paramount -- The Best of John Williams. Music Director Benjamin Rous will lead the orchestra in music from the Star Wars series, Harry Potter, E.T., Jaws, Superman, Lincoln, and more. All music will be performed in the exact film versions. Charlottesville Women's Choir concert at the Haven (through June 03)

For 34 years the Charlottesville Women'€™s Choir has been singing about peace, equality and justice. Inspired by the 2017 Woman's March, the choir will perform a new song, "Signs," by Ruth Huber, celebrating the Me Too Movement, Black Lives Matter, and more. The concert is on Sunday, June, 3rd at 4:30 p.m. at The Haven, in downtown Charlottesville. Donations at the door will benefit International Neighbors Charlottesville, an organization helping refugees settle in the community. Cville Muni Band opens season with Crozet concert (through June 05)

The Charlottesville Municipal Band will kick off its 96th Summer Season with a free concert under the stars at Claudius Crozet Park in Crozet on Tuesday, June 5th at 7:30 p.m. The 80 piece all volunteer ensemble will perform marches, patriotic favorites, popular tunes and movie themes. Learn improv! (through June 10)
Big Blue Door

For eight Sunday afternoons starting on Sunday, June 10th, learn to create original comedy with the introductory improv course at the Big Blue Door. This is Charlottesville's only "longform" improv comedy course -- the scene and character-based style that is the primary training for performers on shows like Parks & Recreation, Saturday Night Live, The Office, and 30 Rock. Eight weeks of exercises, games, and a final class performance teach students how to develop characters, build scenes, listen better, and find what's funny and compelling in anything and everything. To help meet Virginia's new regulation requiring certification for food service managers, the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department will host a 2-day ServSafe manager certification course and exam on Monday, June 11th, and Monday, June 18th, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department on Rose Hill Drive. There is a fee for the course, and participants are required to register in advance by contacting the Albemarle County Virginia Cooperative Extension at 434-872-4580 or email at ruths@vt.edu.

Choir Summer Camp for children (through June 11)

The Children's Choir of Central Virginia will hold a free Choir Summer Camp from Monday, June 11th, until Saturday, June 16th. All rising first through 12th graders are welcome. Grades 1 through 8 will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon -- grades 9 through 12 from 1 to 3, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Charlottesville. Pill to prevent HIV available at little or no cost (through June 22)
Thomas Jefferson Health District

To help people reduce their risk of getting HIV, the Thomas Jefferson Health District, serving the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties, will offer Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis “PrEP”, an HIV prevention medication, at little to no cost. PrEP, also known as Truvada, is a once-daily pill for people who do not have HIV and want to prevent getting it. When taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV through sex by 90% or more. If you are interested in getting PrEP, call Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department at 434-363-6061. New survey to rename Cville parks (through June 30)
City of Charlottesville

Charlottesville City Council has decided to consider new names for the downtown parks initially renamed in June 2017. Council will select a new name for Emancipation Park, formerly Lee Park, and determine whether to keep the name Justice Park, formerly Jackson Park, or select a new name. A new survey for city residents includes 4 names for Emancipation Park and 3 names for Justice Park. Write-in suggestions for both parks will also be considered. The survey will be open from May 4th to June 30th and can be completed online at charlottesville.org/parksurvey, or on paper in the City Manager's office, or by telephone at 970-3109.

June exhibitions feature art about nature. (through June 30)
McGuffey Art Center
 The McGuffey Art Center in downtown Charlottesville will host several new nature-related exhibitions in June.  In Wax, Fire, & Fungi, such natural materials as mushroom roots, beeswax, and tree resin are transformed by four artists to reveal poignant perspectives on the hidden world around us.  Instinct reveals a shared interest in light and juxtaposed colors in paintings of two artists focused on the natural world. Little Creatures of the Mystery Woods showcases the work of Aaron Farrington and Where We Live highlights Jane Skafte’s work on the impact of climate change.  All exhibitions run from May 30th through July 1st.  An opening reception takes place June 1st from 5:30 – 7:30.  For more information, visit www.mcguffeyartcenter.com.
