Astronomer's talk on "Everything in the Universe" (through February 23)
Grace Episcopal Church

Philip Ianna (Eye-anna), Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at the University of Virginia, will give a talk "Through A Looking Glass...to the Edge of the Universe" at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick on Friday, February 23rd, at 7 p.m. His talk will be a brief survey of "everything in the universe" through a virtual tour of observatories in the US, Australia, and Chile. Grace Church is on state road 231 about 10 miles east of Charlottesville. Parking is available and the talk is free and open to the public. The next Charlottesville English Country Dance will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy on Friday, Feb 23rd, at 8 p.m. Introductory instruction will begin at 7:30. No partner is needed. For more information about the English dance series, visit ecdcville.org

February Ballroom Dance event (through February 24)
Charlottesville Chapter of USA Dance

The Charlottesville Chapter of USA Dance will hold its February Ballroom Dance on Saturday, the 24th, at the Unity of Charlottesville Ballroom on Hydraulic Road. The 8:00 o'clock dance will be preceded by a Beginners Class from 7:00 to 7:30 and an Intermediate Class from 7:30 to 8:00. No partner is required and light refreshments will be served. Program on how Cville might be governed differently (through February 25)
League of Women Voters; Charlottesville Tomorrow

The League of Women Voters of the Charlottesville Area and Charlottesville Tomorrow are sponsoring the second of two educational programs in the aftermath of the events in Charlottesville last August. The first session focused on the current state of local government in Charlottesville. The second, set for Sunday, February 25th, explores how Charlottesville might be governed differently in the future. It will be held at the Jefferson School African-American Heritage Center, from 2 to 4 p.m. Call Dena Imlay at 434-296-6651 with questions.

Open house (through February 27)
North Branch School

The North Branch School in Afton is holding an Open House Tuesday, February 27th, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Parents and the general public are invited to meet teachers and other parents and observe classes in session. McGuffey exhibitions for March (through March 02)

The McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville is hosting three exhibits in March: Inspirations 2000-2015 by Judy McLeod; Elements of a Landscape by S. h Wolf; and For the Love of Science: Imaginary Views through the Microscope by Jurgen Ziesmann. The opening reception is Friday, March 2nd at 5:30 p.m.; there’s a panel discussion for Books as Art and Art for Books on Saturday the 24th at 3:45; and Judy McLeod gives a Gallery Talk on the 25th at 2. Senior Center Fundraiser (through March 03)

Savor the rhythms and flavors of Africa at the Grand Gala 2018: Safari Sunsets - a benefit for the Charlottesville Senior Center. The gala will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, at 6:30 p.m., at the Boar's Head Inn Pavilion. There will be cocktails, dinner and dancing to the sizzling sounds of Big Ray and the Kool Kats. Leni Stern and African Trio in concert at UVA (through March 03)
WTJU and Charlottesville Jazz Society

WTJU and The Charlottesville Jazz Society present guitarist Leni (LAY-knee) Stern and her African Trio in concert at The University of Virginia's Brooks Hall at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3rd.  After a long career leading jazz groups that included Michael Brecker and Bill Frisell, Leni began studying African rhythms and melodies in Senegal. 2018 Spring Lecture Series Begins (through March 08)

The Piedmont Master Gardeners and Virginia Cooperative Extension announce the 2018 Spring Lecture Series. The first in the series is Dennis Werner from North Carolina State University on Thursday March 8th at 7pm. World Kidney Day health fair (through March 10)

The University of Virginia Health System's Division of Nephrology -- "the Kidney Doctors"€“ -- invite you to a World Kidney Day health fair Saturday, March 10th, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Carver Recreational Center, Charlottesville. Winter concert (through March 10)
Three Notch'd Road

Join Three Notch'd Road, the Charlottesville Baroque Ensemble, in celebration of St. Patrick's Day with a Celtic variety from ancient chants to toe-tapping dance tunes. There will be three performances. The first will be Saturday, March 10th at 7:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church on Park Street in Charlottesville. The next will be Sunday, March 11th at 3:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick and finally, on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 at the Blackfriar's Playhouse in Staunton. First annual Swing Into Spring benefit dance and concert (through March 11)
Albemarle High School Jazz Band

The nationally-acclaimed Albemarle High School Jazz Band will hold its first annual Swing Into Spring benefit dance and concert on Sunday, March 11th at 7 p.m. in the Jefferson Theater in downtown Charlottesville. Doors open at 6 p.m. The event will feature the band performing a set of jazz standards and pop/R&B hits. The evening will also feature an all-star cast of the area's top musicians sitting in with the ensemble. For more information and advance tickets, visit jeffersontheater.com. Observatory openings (through March 31)
Leander McCormick Observatory

Reach for the stars! Leander McCormick observatory in Charlottesville is open to the public on the first and third Friday night of each month for two hours. These nights include observing with all of the telescopes, audio-visual presentations and tours of the observatory. For educational group tours, the observatory is open on the second and fourth Friday nights of the month, but you must have a reservation. Call 434-924-7494 to reserve. You might also like to schedule one of the special public nights at Fan Mountain observatory - there will be one coming up in April. For information about the observatory or about how to schedule a Fan Mountain visit, call 434-243-1885.
